The letter from John Murphy, President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Council of Cork, informed Clanchy that he had been selected as a vice-president of the new Confession of St. Patrick’s. Clanchy and other prominent merchants often were active in charitable organisations.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Roman Catholic charity, was founded in France in 1833 and was active in Ireland from 1844. Since then it has worked to help the poor.
