The Tanist of Carbery: Daniel MacCarthy Glas and His Long Lost Archive
Historical Exhibition
@ Dunmanway Library from 3rd February 2026
With the support of the Cork County Library and Arts Service and the Heritage Council of Ireland Heritage Stewardship Fund
We are delighted to announce that our exhibition ‘The Tanist of Carbery: Daniel MacCarthy (Glas)’, following its display at the Cork City and County Archives in Cork, is on display at Dunmanway Library from 3rd February.
Much of the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection relates to Dunmanway, featuring numerous letters and documents written by locals from the 1840s to the 1880s, so it is fitting that the exhibition has travelled 'home' to Dunmanway on what is hopefully the first stop on a tour of library services of West Cork.
The launch event on Tuesday 3 February 2026 featured talks by Michelle O’Mahony, History Consultant, from Dunmanway, who helped facilitate the complex process of repatriating the Daniel MacCarthy (Glas) Collection from Oregon, USA to Cork, and Felix Meehan, Archivist at Cork City and County Archives Service, who created the descriptive list of, and the exhibition about, the collection.
The event also featured a wonderful performance by Pádraig MacCárthaigh of a traditional song relating to the MacCarthy (Glas) sept, and presentations of copies of the descriptive list and other documents to Tommy Collins of Dunmanway Historical Association and Fr. Pat O'Donovan, St. Patrick’s Church, Dunmanway.
A big thank you to Lorraine Lynch and staff of Dunmanway Library, Rory Bunce of the County Library and Tjorven Deane of Skibbereen Library for their assistance.
